Question 2 Evaluation
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My media product represents the social group of mainstream youngsters in the age range 16-24 as i have designed the magazine to suit the needs of this group. My magazine is similar to Fader and Q magazine as these are of similar genres to my magazine.
My colour scheme is black, white and dark red and i think these colours suit the style of my magazine very well. I chose to have my cover artist because i think he would appeal to the target audience i am aiming for. The photo on the front shows that the artist has a confident look to him, I also used a blazer and shirt to give of a classy feel to the magazine and this outfit would be something that the majority of my readers would wear. The clothes also represent the genre of the music, and I have taken inspiration from other magazines that have an artist on the front wearing a blazer as I feel this style represents my magazine very well.
My contents page represents the style of my magazine and appeals to the target audience due to the layout, I feel as if the layout is very sophisticated and show what sought of music the magazine is based on. I feel my magazine is very relaxed as it doesn't overpower the reader with lots of information regarding what is inside it just gives them a basic idea of who is featured, I took the inspiration to do this from Fader magazine. I also feel as if my audience would rather it be more basic than lots of information as this suits the style of the audience. The picture on the contents would appeal to the audience as it suits they style of the magazine and I feel that they could relate to the two artists in the picture. The black background surrounding the picture would attract readers as it gives the magazine a classy feel to it as that is the sought of audience I am aiming for. The picture would appeal to the readers as the artists are of a similar age and so they would be able to relate and be inspired by the artists. The fact that my contents talks about big name performers touring I think this would attract readers as the social group I am aiming like to go and see big names performing in large venues.
The double page spread represents my social group as the main image gives of a commanding feel to; it also shows a classy look as these are the two main features I was aiming to produce from my pictures as it relates to people who enjoy mainstream music. I also think that the audience would find the pose that my artist is producing to be very interesting and I think it would encourage them to read the article about the artist. The artist himself would fit in well with the target audience as he represents the social group perfectly. During the interview I wanted to keep the tone of his speech in a formal way but also some informal terms as I wanted to try and best represent my social group.
I used UK Tribes to select a target audience for my magazine and decided to base it on a mainstream audience. I decided to do this because the interests that UK Tribes was suggesting for mainstream was the audience that I wanted to aim at. My artist would be considered as a role model fro my readers as he is someone that they can look up to and be inspired by to make something of their lives.

Q1 Evaluation Draft
During the research stage we looked at a variety of magazines and student examples. The better magazines were following the conventions and so i tried to use the conventions in my magazine. The reason the magazines that follow the conventions is because the producers of the magazine know what will make the target audience buy the magazine.
I have gone with a conventional 3 colour palette for my magazine as i feel this will make the magazine appeal more to my target audience which is 16-24 year old, my colour palette is red, white and black. The 3 colour palette gives the magazine a more professional look and i wanted to try and avoid making my magazine looking tacky and wanted to give it more of a sophisticated feel to it. I looked at magazines such as VIBE and 'Fader' to give me inspiration for my magazine as these magazines are similar to the one i wanted to produce.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I have chosen to use IPC Media as the company to publish my magazine as they have a large portfolio of well-known magazines. They also do not have a lot of music magazines other than NME and this is probably the most well-known music magazine so there is definitely a gap in the market for my type of magazine to be published. My magazine would be advertised on billboards and also T.V adverts my target market also fits in well with IPC'S portfolio as they engage with over 40% of men in the UK so this should enable my magazine to appeal to a large amount of the male population. My magazine should appeal to people who are interested in mainstream music. I would like to make the publication of my magazine a monthly one and would price it at £4.00 as I feel my target audience would be prepared to pay that, I would also like to offer a subscribers deal where they would get the magazine for a cut price if they wanted to buy it every two weeks. I could distribute the magazine in a number of ways such as on stands in newsagents or I could even publish it online as that fits in well with the mainstream brand and I think my social group would be interested in that. But I believe the main way would be through newsagents and shops as I believe the magazine would be able to maximise profit through that process. Iwould advertise shops such as All Saints and Topman in my magazineas these shops appeal to my target audience, as well as this I would also adverise for restaurants such as Nandos and Wagamama, these advertisements would generate income for the magazine.
With more than 60 iconic media brands, IPC creates content for multiple platforms, across print, online, mobile, tablets and events. We engage with 26 million UK adults - almost two thirds of UK women and over 40% of UK men. Our award winning portfolio of websites reaches over 25 million global users every month.

How did you attract/address your audience?
My target audience ranges between older teenagers and young adults of the age 16-24, and so I have designed my magazine to suit the needs of this target audience and will attract them to buy it. I am mainly looking to attract males due to the type of music but I think my magazine could also attract females to my magazine as there is a male on the front cover. I also think that the clothes that my artist is wearing would mainly attract males to it as they could be interested in the style of clothing that the artist is wearing. I also believe that the colours of the magazine would attract my target audience to buy it is as they are quite manly colours such as black and white and i think they would be an aesthetically pleasing to a male as they co-ordinate well the photo and also make it look very stylish. The cover lines feature a mixture of male and female artists and also mentions tours of different artists so I think this would appeal to both male and female as they may both enjoy the music that the artists on the cover lines feature. I have chosen a mixture of British artists and American artists to use on my cover lines this is because a large amount of big superstars are American and so I thought this would appeal more to my target audience. I also believe that my audience would prefer to see the American artists live and at a big venue than going to see a smaller British band.
I mention festivals such as V and Wireless this is due to the fact that these festivals play the type of music that my target audience would listen to and so I think that this would attract them to buy my magazine.
I designed my contents page to suit the style of my audience as the content is brief in its description in what is available inside the magazine and so I did this as i believe that my audience would prefer this style other than a contents page with lots of information on it. I also think that the style of music I am aiming for is shown in the contents page. The language register that I used in my magazine was informal language as I wanted the magazine to feel realistic and I didn’t want to have any spelling mistakes, incorrect grammar or slang involved in my contents. I feel that the picture would be attractive to them as the artists are young and successful who they would aspire to be like. The fact that many of my features gives the reader an insight in to some of their favourite artists is a feature that I feel would attract my audience. An example of this is the interview with Justin Timberlake that is featured inside.
My double page spread would appeal to my audience I believe through the picture and the way he is standing, I also feel as if the way my artist is dressed shows that he is mainstream and would appeal to my audience. I think that the audience would be interested in what the artist has to say and so would want to read the interview. The interview points out the qualities of the artist and he is represents himself in a very positive manner which I think would attract my audience to buy my magazine as they have respect for the artist.
Overall I think that I have done a lot of things that would attract my target audience to buy my magazine and I have addressed them in an appropriate manner. I think my audience profile helped me a lot to be able to achieve this and I also focused a lot on how my artist would be represented to the audience and how that would fit in with my magazine.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Computer- I used a computer available at school during my media lessons and also in my study periods at school as well as my own time using my computer at home to construct my magazine and blog.
Adobe Photo shop - This is the editing software that is available on the computers in the media rooms and also on other computers around the school. This was the programme i used to construct my magazine and the tools on there helped me create the effect i wanted to produce on my magazine. During the preliminary task i was unsure on how to use photoshop correctly, but after that stage I began to feel comfortable using it.
Microsoft Office Word 2010- I used this programme to construct my double page spread to make sure that all the spelling was correct due to the fact there is no spell check on photoshop. It also enabled me to keep a word count on my work aswell as helping with the structure of the article.
Memory Stick- I used this to transfer all the photos that i had taken onto my computer and then onto photoshop so that i could try different photos on my magazine to see which one i thought looked best.
Camera- I used a camera to take all the photos that i needed for my magazine. Although it may not have been the highest quality camera i thought that i produced some good photos using the camera, that worked well on my magazine.
AVS Room- This is the room i used to take my photos and with the white background the room has i thought that was the perfect room to use for my magazine as it fits in well with the colour pallette. The lighting in that room is also very good although when i took my pictures one of the lights had broken so i had to try and sought out the lighting to make the photos still look good.
Tripod- I used this to make sure the camera was steady so that i could produce the best possible photos i could, it also helped with the type of camera shot i wanted to take.
UK Tribes- I used this website to research different types of target markets for my magazine. The website was very helpful as it gave me a selection of groups and what their interests were.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?
I have improved vast amounts from when I first did the preliminary task as I had very little idea on how to use photoshop to create my magazine. My knowledge was also very limited on what features needed to be included in my magazine and what features magazines use to make it so succesful. Looking back at my prelim and my magazine looks very tacky and is a very basic layout for the cover and contents pages, whereas my finished mgazine I feel is massive improvement on that. I feel that my magazine is of a much higher standard than my prelim showing that i have improved throughout the course. My Understanding and knowledge of magazines has drastically improved. My knowledge was mainly gained during the research and planning as it showed me how magazines appeal to different types of audience and the techniques and conventions they use. My knowledge was also improving when i was constructing my final magazine as I had to use the techniques i had already learnt and try and improve on them. I also find that looking at real magazines really helped me understand what worked and what didnt and i could use this as a basis to make sure my magazine suited my genre. My photos are definetly of a higher standard than on my prelim as they much more clearer and suit the style of the magazine a lot better.

Artist Profile
Artist Name- Christy Hughes
Style- Mainstream Pop- This consists of music that is currently in the charts and being palyed on radio stations such as Radio 1 and Capital FM, this style of music appeals to a large amount of teenagers in the UK as it has a very upbeat style to it.
Artist Age- 16
Influences- Olly Murs, Bruno Mars, Drake, Kanye west, Beyonce
Front Cover- This will feature a mid shot of Christy and will be placed in the middle of the page with details of what will be featured in the magazine on either side. Christy will be dressed in a very fashionable outfit consisting of a smart shirt, blazer and a tie. I feel that this outfit fits in well with my magazine as i want to appeal to high end market and i think this style would appeal to my target audience. The colours of the outfit will contrast very well with the colour palette of my magazine and so in turn it will compliment my layout as it gives avery stylish feel to the magazine.
Double Page Spread- This will consist of a picture of Christy on one half of the magazine with some text placed around and also on him to make the text stand out more it will be in a bold font and also a differnt colour to the outfit that Christy is wearing. On the other side will be where my text will be placed and it will feature an interview with Christy, there will also be a few pictures of him on the page. In the interview the questions will be in a differnt colour to the answers so that it is clear and easier for the reader to understand.
Language Register
The language register used by magazines all depends upon the genre of the magazine and the target audience so the content of the magazine appeals to them. Although there are some magazines that dont have a specific genre and vary there use of language with the type of music that is being used.
An example of an informal magazine would be NME this magazine uses a more informal approach using more everyday language and more simple lexis, slang may also be used in this type of magazine. There is also a lot of use of immature images and excessive cover and strp lines which give the magazine a bigger sense of informality. This seems to work for NME as the terminology that they use attracts their target audience to the magazine and is also relevant to thier specific genre.
An example of a Formal magazine is Q, the language register would use very little slang or even none at all. The terminology that would be used in the magazine would be of a high class so that would potentially exclude teenagers from buying the magazine, and would create a older high class audience. Other features of the magzine such as the font and images would also be of a much more formal nature. There would be minimal text on the front cover as this creates a much cleaner layout and makes the it look like a higher class magazine.
Overall i want my magazine to use a mixture of formal and informal terminology as my target audience is 16-24 so i do not want to make it overly formal as this could limt my target audience. Althogh i do not want my magazine to be to informal aa that could make it have a 'cheap' feal to it and that is not what i want to achieve. Ideally i would like my magazine to inbetween the two so that it appeals to a more wider range of audience.

Colour Palette
I chose to do 3 colour palette of red white and black as these colours compliment each other very well, the white background also enables the red and black text to stand out more. I have also seen examples of magazines with these colours in the genre that my magazine is.An example of this is VIBE magazine.
The colour palette of is vital as it is what first attracts the target market to your magazine, so you want it to stand out. These 3 colours stand out and have been used on previous magazines that have been really succesful. Most magazines use a 3 colour palette as this makes it look professional and appealing to the audience. An example of this is the VIBE magazine shown above as the red masthead stands out on the black hat that T.I is wearing. The black text also stands out on the white background, it can be organised so that the more important text is in red and stands out more and the more standard text is in black.
Red is the color of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love.Red brings text and images to the foreground. You can use it as an accent color to stimulate people to make quick decisions.
White is associated with light, goodness, innocence and purity. It is considered to be the color of perfection. White represents coolness and cleanliness and makes the other 2 colours stand out more on a white background.
Black is associated with power, elegance, formality, death, evil, and mystery. It is considered to be a very formal, elegant, and prestigious color.

Analysis of institution- IPC Media
IPC Media is the UK's leading consumer magazine and digital publisher
With more than 60 iconic media brands, IPC creates content for multiple platforms, across print, online, mobile, tablets and events. We engage with 26 million UK adults - almost two thirds of UK women and over 40% of UK men. Our award winning portfolio of websites reaches over 25 million global users every month.I have chosen to use IPC Media as the company to publish my magazine as they have a large portfolio of well known magazines. They also do not have a lot of music magazines other than NME and this is probably the most well known music magazine so there is definitely a gap in the market for my type of magazine to be published. My target market also fits in well with IPC'S portfolio as they engage with over 40% of men in the UK so this should enable my magazine to appeal to a large amount of the male population. My magazine should appeal to people who are interested in mainstream music.
Audience Research
After researching different types of audiences on UK tribes and using my own knowledge i have decided that the audience my magazine would appeal to the most is the male gender with an age range of 16-24, specifically with an interest in mainstream Hip Hop and Pop. Music interests of my audience would be artists such as Kanye West, Drake, Rihanna, Olly Murs, Bruno Mars.
My target audience enjoys regular trips to big shopping malls such as The Bull Ring in Birmingham and visits shops such as Topman and Allsaints. They also enjoy going to music gigs and big venues such as the O2 arena in London. They prefer to download music online such as iTunes other than going to a shop. They read magzines such as VIBE and Billboard and enjoy regular trips to restaurants such as Wagamama and Handmade Burger Co. They may also enjoy regular trips to the cinema to see the latest blockbuster film and listening to radio stations such as Radio 1 or Capital FM. They may participate in sports such as Football or Basketball. Social Networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook will also be a big part of their social lifes as these are very popular and they can follow the artists that would appear in the magazine.

Inspiration for Blitz
I choose to call my magazine Blitz as at first i wanted to call it Bliss but it turns out that the name is already being used in a real life magazine and also the name is quite girly so i decided against it. I wanted to use a one word masthead instead of two as i wanted it to stand out more and also it makes the layout look clear and that is the sort of style i want to do.
